Rinse chana dal under cold water until water runs clear. Soak for at least one hour.
In a pressure cooker, heat oil over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and wait until they start to crackle.
Add onions, ginger, and garlic. Saute until onions turn golden.
Stir in chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder, coriander powder, and salt. Cook until tomatoes are soft.
Drain the soaked dal and add it to the cooker along with chopped green chilies.
Pour in water and close the lid of the pressure cooker. Cook for about 10 minutes after achieving high pressure.
Allow the pressure to release naturally before opening the lid.
Garnish with chopped cilantro and serve hot.
