Dal Chawal is a quintessential Indian comfort food, consisting of steamed rice and a hearty lentil soup.
Rinse the lentils and soak for 30 minutes.
Cook the rice with water and salt until fluffy and set aside.
In a pot, heat oil and add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, and asafetida.
Add onions, garlic, and green chili to the pot and sauté until golden brown.
Drain the lentils and add them to the pot with turmeric and salt, cover with water.
Bring to a boil and then simmer until the lentils are cooked and the dal is thickened.
Adjust seasoning and finish with a sprinkle of chopped coriander.
Serve the hot dal over steamed rice.
